For the daring Tom Jones
It wasn't often that Lady Heather stepped out of her office to find a bar in place of her expected hallway. Oddly, the first thing that tipped her off were the different sounds coming from the bar.

When you were used to screams and the sounds of darker things, it was an obvious change. Heather frowned, bringing her hand over the curve of her neck. She didn't know quite what to make of this, so she walked over to the bar and laid her hands over the top, very much hoping she looked like she looked as if she was still in control and not as confused as she felt.

"Who would like to tell me where I am?"

Regardless of her garb, the woman who walked in comported herself as a lady and as such a certain young man whose identity was easy enough to tell did stand and make his way to her.

"If I may, madame?" he said with a winning smile and a brief bow.

"Lady Heather," she corrected him levelly, doing her best not to be impressed with the bow or the smile.

...it worked for the most part, but she gave him a consenting nod. "You may."

He smiled again, nodding at the correction, before laying out his arm to the room.

"You have found yourself, if I am not mistaken for the first occasion, within the confines of a tavern most strange situated in fact at the end of the Universe itself, as I have been told, where all places and times may meet and share drink and food in good cheer."

"And people merely appearing here ... this happens often?" The anthropologist in her is immediately curious about what sort of interesting interactions a place like this would allow for.

She assumed that the man knew better than to lie to her. Most people did even if they'd just met her.

It was not in Tom's nature to lie; he was an honest and open young man at heart and would only do so in an effort of protection for those in need of such.

"It does, Lady Heather," he said with a gesture at the door. "Indeed, rarely to folk come to this place in any other way."

"That's peculiar indeed," She admitted with a small smile, finding a spot on the bar to sit. She motioned for him to follow.

Since he'd been helpful she supposed he deserved some sort of reward in the form of company.

He followed happily, though he kept a respectful distance.

"The whole of this place is peculiar, milady, as I am sure you will soon learn."

He nodded to the bar.

"I would offer to provide for you a drink from the bar, but I must admit that the first is given free, perhaps as an apology for the impertinence of place's whims. After, however, should you want for more, I would be pleased to buy the lady a drink as further welcome."

"I make a point of avoiding accepting drinks from men who have not told me their name," she pointed out with a faint smile, glancing to the bar curiously.

Simple deduction suggested ... she ordered her drink and it popped up. She swirled her drink. "I am quickly beginning to see that this place is very strange indeed."

He ducked his head in shame, as his jocularity had once more caused him to ignore basic good manners.

"My apologies, milady," he said with a bow of his head.

"The name is Jones. Tom, commonly, and it is my pleasure to meet you."

"Tom." She nodded thoughtfully while he spoke. Tom Jones, hm?

She couldn't help the curious quirk of her brow. She supposed it wasn't completely impossible for this to be that Tom Jones. "And your apology is accepted for now."

"Much appreciated, milady," he said with a smile as he leaned an arm on the bar.

"Are there any other questions I might answer for you? If only to make up for my poor manners."

She took a sip of her drink and glanced to Tom curiously.

"What time is it that you are from, Mr. Jones?"

"The year of our lord 1749," he said with a nod of his head. "And yourself, milady? I ask not to be rude but that I might have a better idea of the behavior the lady is familiar with."

"Quite a while after that, I'm afraid. 2006 or so." She set her drink down on the countertop.

Now she had a much better idea of who he was.

He didn't seem upset by the admission nor surprised; he merely nodded and ordered for himself a flagon of ale.

"I have heard of others from farther in the future, as far as five hundred years from your own period but know of quite a few from your own period."

She took the opportunity to reach a hand over and give his a light squeeze before she continued.

"I admit that I'm glad to know there are others here from around the same time as myself."

He gave only the slightest indication of his surprise at such an action before looking to her with the brightest of smiles.

"Milady," he said, both a thank you and an opening, "I am glad as well, for having brought some measure of comfort to a lady as yourself."

"It is a shame that men in the time I come from have for the large part abandoned such niceties." She took another slow sip of her drink and nodded.

He bowed his head with a faint grin.

"I have heard as such from others and yet each time I hear it, it is no less astounding and, in truth, no less unfortunate. I cannot claim to be much of a gentleman, for I have done my share of trouble, but even I might always treat a lady as she surely deserves."

"I must admit that it might have once been the reason for my current occupation," she smiled then, taking another sip of her drink, "but it was a fleeting one. I do quite enjoy my business." And it makes her loads of money, which doesn't hurt.

Twenty thousand a week in the good seasons.

He nodded.

"As you say, lady, though I cannot think of an occupation that might cause as such, though I rejoice at least that you enjoy your business."

She quirked her brow at him. "I'm attempting to remember if there might be a term for it from your time," she admitted, "as I'm relatively sure Dominatrix might be an alien word."

Heather paused. "My business is nothing so scandalous as a brothel, but certainly not a house of tea."

He couldn't help the raise of an eyebrow but he indicated no distress.

"Surely, madame, whatever business you might own to, an it cause no harm, tis not of any distress to me. For I am oft to be found acting in ways considered by most to be unseemly and yet always do I attempt all with the best intentions."

She grinned faintly as she set her drink down. "No harm at all ... or at least no harm that my customers don't pay very well for."

Heather nodded, "I would be disappointed if you attempted anything less than the best intentions, but people can be funny things."

A gleam of understanding lit his eyes.

"Then you would be a lady who caters to those of more exotic tastes."

A whore of one manner or another. Then again, Tom wasn't against whores in any way shape or form. They weren't generally something he had to turn to, but he would deny no woman her chance to feed herself and no man his pleasures if they could be gained no other way. Whether by charm, grace, or wealth might a man win an evening of a woman's embrace and in truth, no way was more honorable than another.

"You will hear no admonishments from me, nor any sermons. If the need did not exist, and this need within commonman and lord alike, then you would have no business. And if this need exist, then" and perhaps he had learned a thing or two from Mr. Square "why should not one of enterprise fulfill it to better her position?"
